eraserheads and the 90's generation

Listening to the Eraserheads never fails to make me nostalgic. It was more than ten years ago when they were the icon of the 90’s generation. They reigned during the time of Giordano and Adidas shirts, plaid polos, Chuck Taylors, Doc Martens and unkempt hair.

It was the best of times.
It was college.
The Eraserheads were the soundtrack of our lives.
They were the voice of a displaced youth.
A displaced youth who lived the tail end of the Marcos era but were too young to understand.
A displaced youth who saw the People Power happen but mostly remembered the tanks, the nuns, the flowers inside guns’ barrels, the yellow shirts, and an innocent Kris Aquino.
A displaced youth who experienced daily brownouts, forced to study by candlelight, but blessed by the chance to see the stars at night instead of Super Mario on a 14” de-pihit TV.
A displaced youth who started with manual typing and ended high school with Word Star, discovered Microsoft on the way out of college, while internet was a waste of time because it took so long to download.
A displaced youth who saw Miriam Defensor-Santiago still sane enough to have been considered by young voters as the president of their choice.
A displaced youth who had a chance to feel illusory progress under the reign of Fidel Ramos.

It was a time of angst.
A time when our generation needed to figure out where we really belonged, who we really were and what we are destined to do as 90’s children.
We drowned our worries with Nirvana, Alanis Morisette, Tori Amos and of course, Eraserheads. Along with beer, tequila, vodka and gin.

Listening to Shake Yer Head, Alapaap, Torpedo, Huwag mo nang Itanong…. And all other Eraserheads classics…

The voice of those times when everything was uncertain but everything was all right.

Very true! hehe =) I was in first year high school when typewriter lessons were part of the curriculum. In second year we advanced to computers... using floppy discs!!! hehehe (remember those huge diskettes?) In third year we were already programming stuff using turbo pascal. In fourth year we were all amazed and hook by the awesome technology of... the mIrc... =)

the music of eraserheads was also the sountrack of my high school life, along with yano... and also nirvana and pearlm jam...

this only means one thing: we're old!!! lol. =)

i always equate eraserheads with nostalgia. listening to their music never fails to leave a stupid grin plastered on my face. all their songs (if i must say til cutterpillow) have this uncanny reassurance that despite being different, despite seemingly illegitimate angst, you're still you and being who you are is something that you should be comfortable about.

eheads is a legend. it's an era. and they will always be remembered.

kaya ko pinagsikapang makapasok sa UP dahil kay ely buendia! hahaha!

toni: yeah. i remember the joy of being uncertain. now it seems like a bad thing.

shivs: toast! mabuhay ang rakrakan ng 90's! heheh!
